PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Lincoln University women’s golf team will open the 2010 spring season at the Shootout at Aguila that will be hosted by Lewis University that will take place this Friday and Saturday at the Aguila Golf Club.
While the men’s team was able to get a tournament under their belts, the women will hit the links for the first time this Friday.
“The women were excited this offseason,” head coach Jerry Coffman said. “We were able to get our first turn done as a team in the fall and they were able to get fitted properly for their clubs, which should pay dividends.”
Lincoln spent the entire fall season playing with just four golfers and it will be the same again this spring season.
“We were one short through all of the fall and it will be the same again this spring,” Coffman said. “Megan Sundermeyer would be right up there with our other golfers, but we won’t have her back until next year.”
Instead, four freshmen carried the Blue Tigers, with Kaitlyn Schwartze posting the top marks throughout the fall, averaging an 88 per round. Schwartze played 10 rounds, with her best result coming at the Triton Invitational in which she fired a 168, which included her lowest round of 81.
Brittany Smith wasn’t far behind, as she played in eight rounds and averaged an 89.4. Smith also performed well at the Triton Invite, carting a season-low 171, while she shot her low round of 82 in the first tournament of the fall at the Northeastern State University Golf Classic.
Shea Colley played in all 10 rounds in the fall averaging 96.7 per round. Colley’s best finish came at the Bubba Watson Invite, in which she finished with a 188, while her low round of 92 was achieved at the Triton Invite.
Hannah Sprague also played all 10 rounds averaging a 102. Sprague carted a 192 at the Lewis Mixed Fall Classic for her best finish overall and also for her low round score in the fall, as she fired a 95.
“We have been trying to get on the course the past few weeks, but it has been tough,” Coffman said. “Not only have we been battling the weather, but a few of the girls have been fighting through injuries.”
