Hilltoppers Pound Out 28 Runs in Sweep of Lincoln
Baseball, St. Edward's
AUSTIN, TX.—The Lincoln University baseball team got off to the start they wanted Saturday, opening up the doubleheader with a pair of runs, but after that, St. Edward’s rolled up the next 27 runs over the course of the first game and into the second game to complete the sweep, 16-2, and 12-2 in Heartland Conference action at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
Lincoln (0-5, 0-5 HC) came out ready to go in the first inning of game one, as Chris Pfau and Adam Rush each tallied singles to set the table for Brian Patrick who doubled down the right field line to bring Pfau home for the first run of the game. Rush advanced to third on the play and came home on the next play, as Cie Arell grounded out to shortstop giving the Blue Tigers the 2-0 lead.
St. Edward’s (3-2, 3-2 HC) wasted no time answering, as the Hilltoppers rattled off four runs in their half of the first inning, as Justin Shufelt delivered the big bomb, a three-run homer to put St. Edward’s up 4-2 after one inning of play.
The Hilltoppers helped put the game out of reach with four in the third and another big inning in the sixth, tallying five more runs to cruise to the game one victory. St. Edward’s doubled up Lincoln in hits, pounding out 12 to the Blue Tigers’ six. Patrick was the long Blue Tiger with more than one hit, going 2-for-3 with the RBI double.
In game two, the Hilltoppers kept the pedal to the metal, tallying a run in the bottom of the first and then erupted for a seven spot in the second inning, as Dexter Moreno launched a grand slam to help put St. Edward’s in control, up 8-0 after just two innings.
Lincoln finally broke through in the sixth frame, as Pfau and Rush set the table again, as Pfau singled and Rush walked and after a passed ball moved both runners up, Gus Durst walked to load the bases. Patrick then hit a shot to second that wasn’t handled and on the error, Pfau came around for the first Blue Tiger run in game two. Adam Burcham later grounded out to second to score Rush for the other Lincoln run.
Neither team tallied a lot of hits in game two, as St. Edward’s outhit the Blue Tigers, 7-4, while the Hilltoppers took advantage of five Lincoln walks and five errors to tally their 12 runs. Patrick, again just like the first game, was the only Blue Tigers with more than a hit, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Lincoln will conclude their four-game set with St. Edward’s Sunday morning with first pitch set for 11 a.m., as the teams will play another set of seven inning games. Fans will be able to follow all of the action through St. Edward’s live stats and audio broadcast at the link below.
