Basketball Looks to Finish Longest Road Trip of Season in Style
Coach Redmond, Coach Vaughn
LAREDO, TX. – Following a tough two games in Austin, the Lincoln University basketball teams will look to finish the long road swing in style as they will nearly cross into Mexico to battle Heartland Conference opponent Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon.
In a trip that takes over 16 hours just straight from Jefferson City to Laredo, the Lincoln women’s basketball team will look to complete a season sweep, while the men’s basketball team will look for some revenge.
On the women’s side, the Blue Tigers opened Heartland Conference play in style, defeating the Dustdevils, 69-59, back on Dec. 17 inside Jason gym. Senior Liere Dancy and sophomore Quenita Washington each tallied 15 points, while seniors Ashley Norris and Stacey Smith added 13 points apiece in the victory. Lincoln dominated a majority of the contest, jumping the lead as high as 13 a couple of times in the second half.
TAMI (4-17, 3-5 HC) has since recorded conference victories over Newman (70-66), Oklahoma Panhandle (58-56) and most recently, Newman again this past Thursday in Laredo (68-61).
The win over Newman was the first this season at home for the Lady Dustdevils, as they currently hold a 1-6 mark on their home floor. Lincoln (8-11, 3-7 HC) now sits on the outside looking in on the conference tournament, after sliding out of the fifth spot into a tie for the seventh spot with Newman.  St. Edward’s and TAMI are tied for fourth with a 3-5 conference mark, while Oklahoma Panhandle holds the sixth and final spot for the conference tournament with a 3-6 mark.
The Lady Dustdevils have three players averaging in double-figures in points, with Mary Tobias leading the way (13.1), while Courtney Dixon averages just a shade under Tobias (12.8) and Johnna Williams chips in 10.8 per game.
Lincoln and TAMI will tipoff the first game of a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Fans will be able to follow the action through Texas A&M International’s internet broadcast at the link below.
On the men’s side, Lincoln (3-17, 1-10 HC) came up just short against St. Edward’s on Thursday, dropping a tough, 72-69, Heartland Conference battle.
TAMI (8-12, 5-5 HC) roughed up Lincoln back on Dec. 17, running away with the 83-48 victory inside Jason Gym. The Blue Tigers were within six at halftime, but couldn’t stay with the Dustdevils in the second half.
St. Paul Latham came up big for the Dustdevils in Thursday’s win over Newman, pouring in 34 points to upset the top-seed, 84-82. Lincoln will look to counter with another solid effort from junior Michael Dorton, who once again tallied a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds against St. Edward’s.
Lincoln and TAMI will tipoff the second game of a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. CST Saturday afternoon. Fans will be able to follow the action through Texas A&M International’s internet broadcast at the link below.
