Anthony Welch
Lincoln's Anthony Welch tallied 15 points against St. Edward's Thursday night.
AUSTIN, TX. – The Lincoln University men’s basketball team stayed with St. Edward’s throughout the entire game, but came up just short in the end, 72-69, Thursday night in Heartland Conference action.
Lincoln (3-17, 1-10 HC) built up a three-point lead for their largest of the first half at the 11:18 mark following a tip-in by junior Michael Dorton giving the Blue Tigers the 14-11 lead.
St. Edward’s (9-12, 4-6 HC) quickly tied the game and after the teams were tied for the third time in the first half, the Hilltoppers finished the half on a 8-4 run to take a 34-30 lead into the locker room.
The Blue Tigers kept the game close in the second half, regaining the lead after freshman Anthony Welch delivered a pair of free throws at the 18:29 mark to give Lincoln the 37-36 advantage.
After the 14th tie of the game at the 2:11 mark in the second half, St. Edward’s came up with a clutch three-pointer from Jeff Miner to give the Hilltoppers the three-point lead. Lincoln would get within two after senior Lionel Booker hit a pair from the charity stripe, but with just four seconds, St. Edward’s hit one of two free throws allowing the rest of the time to run off the clock.
Dorton led the Blue Tigers with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Welch added 15 points and eight rebounds and Booker added 14 points.
Miner led the Hilltoppers and all-scorers with 27 points, going 10-for-16 from the field.
