Cards Hold on for Sweep of Blue Tigers
Kyle Lasley

SAN ANTONIO, TX. – The Lincoln University baseball team nearly pulled out the second game of a doubleheader, but Incarnate Word held on for the sweep, taking the first game, 13-2, in seven innings and 5-2 in the second game Tuesday afternoon in Heartland Conference action at Sullivan Field.

The Cardinals (0-3, 0-3 HC) opened up an early lead in the first game, coming across with five runs in the second inning, as an error brought in two runs and John Zule delivered a two-run single to help contribute to the early 5-0 advantage.

Incarnate Word kept the pressure on, tallying six more in the fourth inning to boost the lead to 12-0 and after adding another run in the fifth, Lincoln (0-3, 0-3 HC) finally broke through with their first runs of the game in the top of the sixth as James Johndrow scored on a wild pitch and Gus Durst singled to left field to score Chris Pfau for the Blue Tigers’ two runs in the first game.

Lincoln struck first in the second game, as the Blue Tigers threatened in the first inning after Pfau led off with a walk, then stole second and following two strikeouts, Brian Patrick singled bringing home Pfau for the early 1-0 lead.

Incarnate Word tied the game in the bottom of the second as Zule reached on an error, allowing an unearned run to come across.

Lincoln briefly took the lead again in the fourth, as Patrick singled and advanced to second on a balk and later came home on a single by Cie Arell to put the Blue Tigers back in front, 2-1.

Incarnate Word quickly turned the game around in the bottom half of the fourth inning, as after a double play looked to get Lincoln out of the inning, the Cards put together two singles, a walk and a big single by Reno Malay helped lead to a three-run inning and a 4-2 Incarnate Word lead.

Patrick had a solid game two, tallying two hits in four at-bats, while also tallying an RBI and a run scored. Pfau also performed well on the mound, lasting six innings, giving up four runs, three earned, three strikeouts and two walks. Lincoln struggled defensively, as one day after committing no errors, Lincoln tallied six combined in the two games on Tuesday.

Lincoln will return to action this Saturday, Feb. 6 when they continue the road trip and Heartland Conference action at St. Edward’s with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
