St. Mary's Cruises Past Lincoln Men
Michael Dorton
Lincoln's Michael Dorton tallied 10 points in the loss to St. Mary's.

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. – Looking to ride the momentum gained from their last contest, the Lincoln University men’s basketball team ran into a roadblock in St. Mary’s, as the Rattles rolled to the 73-45 victory Saturday afternoon in Heartland Conference action inside Jason Gym.

St. Mary’s (11-9, 6-4 HC) opened the game on a 7-2 run over the first four minutes to set the tone for the afternoon.

Lincoln (3-16, 1-9 HC) fought back, taking the lead at the 11:57 mark on a jumper by junior Michael Dorton to give the Blue Tigers the 12-11 advantage.

Lincoln took a two-point advantage at the 4:53 mark on a jumper by freshman Anthony Welch to make it 21-19, but that would be the largest and last lead of the night for the Blue Tigers.

Junior Darrius Gaters helped keep the game close at halftime, as he delivered a three at the buzzer to cut St. Mary’s halftime lead to five, 32-27.

The Blue Tigers trimmed the lead down to six just over two minutes into the second half on a jumper by junior Eric Jones, but that would be as close as Lincoln would get the rest of the game.

Three Blue Tigers reached double-figures, with Gaters, Dorton and Welch all tallying 10 points each.

Jeremy Fonteneaux nearly scored as many points as he did minutes played, as he led the Rattlers and all-scorers with 20 points in just 23 minutes on the court.

St. Mary’s also did a nice job defensively, as Lincoln shot just 27.3 percent (15-55) from the field, while the Rattlers shot just a shade over 50 percent going 29-for-57 (50.9)

Lincoln will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 4 on the road against Heartland Conference opponent St. Edward’s with tipoff set for 8 p.m.
