Cold Shooting Dooms Blue Tigers
Terika Adams
Lincoln's Terika Adams flies through traffic drawing the foul against Incarnate Word Thursday night. Adams posted a season-high 15 points.

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. – Although the Blue Tigers struggled from the field, they nearly came away with the victory, as Incarnate Word edged the Lincoln University women’s basketball team, 59-46, Thursday night in Heartland Conference action at Jason Gym.

Incarnate Word (13-6, 7-1 HC) jumped out to a five-point lead over the first four minutes, before the Blue Tigers (7-10, 2-6 HC) came back to tie the game up at seven on a three-pointer by sophomore Quenita Washington at the 15:06 mark. That would be the first of many ties over the next several minutes, as after the fourth tie of the first half, the Cardinals began to pull away a little bit jumping the lead to six, 22-16 on a jumper by Jasmine Smith at the 4:33 mark.

Lincoln would trim one-point off the lead over the final four minutes to keep Incarnate Word’s lead at just five, 24-19, at halftime.

The Cards threatened to run away with the game several times in the second half, jumping the lead up to 10 at the 14:50 mark on a three-pointer by Cinnamon Kava making it 31-21.

The Blue Tigers had one last run left in them, as they trimmed the lead back to five, 49-44, at the 2:37 mark on a three-pointer by freshman Terika Adams, but Incarnate Word converted on their next two trips down the floor to ice the game.

Adams had her best game of the season, posting a season-high 15 points, going 4-for-6 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Senior Stacey Smith also found her way to double-digits with 11 points and nine rebounds to lead the squad.

Incarnate Word had even distribution throughout the lineup, with only one player in double-figures as Nikki Brown posted 14 points to lead the way.

Shooting was tough for Lincoln all night, as the Blue Tigers shot just 26 percent (13-50), while the Cards countered with a 43 percent (24-56) effort. Lincoln stayed in the game thanks to a strong effort from the charity stripe, as the Blue Tigers went 16-for-19 (84.2) from the line, while the Cardinals went just 8-for-12 (66.7).

Lincoln will stay at home for their next contest when they welcome in St. Mary’s to Jason Gym Saturday afternoon for another Heartland Conference tilt with game time set for 2 p.m.
