Men's Basketball To Play In Hillyard Classic
MBB Team

ST. JOSEPH’S, MO. – The Lincoln University men’s basketball team will continue their road swing to start the regular season, as they will participate in the 18th annual Hillyard Classic this upcoming Friday and Saturday at host Missouri Western State.

MWSU has owned the tournament they host, posting a 30-4 record in the classic and are 20-2 while playing at the MWSU Fieldhouse, which will be the venue for the games this weekend.

The Griffons (0-1) opened the season similar to the Blue Tigers, in that they split a pair of exhibition games, while dropping their regular season opener. MWSU lost at Division I Creighton, 94-69, and then defeated Livin’ the Dream, 78-65, to conclude their exhibition slate. The Griffons opened the regular season this past Tuesday at home against Quincy, dropping the contest, 73-65.

Marcus Rhodes dominated in the one game for the Griffons, posting 25 points against Quincy, while adding eight rebounds to also lead the team. Justin Taylor with nine points was the next closest on the team in scoring.

The Blue Tigers come off of a very competitive game against Division I University of Missouri-Kansas City, where Lincoln led by six early and trailed by just five at halftime, before falling, 78-52. Junior Darrius Gaters and senior Ryan Spearman had big nights for the Blue Tigers, with each posting 15 points apiece, while senior Lionel Booker added 10 points.

The last time the two teams met came back in 2007-08, as MWSU edged the Blue Tigers, 78-77, as the game was also played at the MWSU Fieldhouse.

MWSU and Lincoln will tipoff at 7:30 p.m. CST Friday night and the game can be followed a few different ways.

Lincoln will conclude the Classic on Saturday against Rockhurst. Rockhurst will play against Central Oklahoma on Friday night, before facing Lincoln.

So far on the season, Rockhurst is also 0-1, dropping a home game against Nebraska-Omaha, 79-71, this past Wednesday. Rockhurst, like MWSU and Lincoln, also played a pair of exhibition games, dropping both against William Jewell (70-64) and Benedictine (68-62).

Aaron Hill and Jake Meyer were the only two Rockhurst players to tally double-digits in their regular season opener, with Hill posting 29 points and Meyer with 10.

Lincoln and Rockhurst last played back in 2004-05, with Rockhurst winning at home, 91-59.

Lincoln and Rockhurst will tipoff Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. and fans will be able to follow the game the same way as the game against MWSU.
